California Flood Preparedness Week is here. Are you ready for the next big flood?
It’s been just over 50 years since the January 1974 devastated Dunsmuir, flooding and destroying homes all over town; even some homes well away from the Sacramento River and outside the floodplain couldn’t escape the historic flood.
Did you know that 40% of National Flood Insurance Program claims occur outside of high-risk flood areas? This means flood insurance is still a good idea even if you aren’t in a mapped floodplain. Especially because the MAXIMUM amount FEMA will give you to rebuild or repair your home in a disaster is only $42,500.
Flooding is not covered under most insurance plans, and flood insurance must be purchased separately if you want coverage.
Check out the Dunsmuir Flood Preparedness page here (link) to see if you’re in the floodplain and to see more historic flood photos like the ones below of the 1974 and 1964 floods.
