Spring 2026 Green Waste Day & Defensible Space Results

Green Waste Day: Saturday, May 2, 2026 | 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM Community Center / Ball Field Parking Lot, 4841 Dunsmuir Avenue

 What We Accomplished Together

This page summarizes two connected efforts that together reflect Dunsmuir's ongoing commitment to fire safety and community resilience: our Spring 2026 Green Waste Day event, and the pre-event defensible space work carried out by volunteers in the weeks leading up to it. Both are part of Dunsmuir's Firewise program and contribute to our community's annual fire safety goals.

Green Waste Day Event Results, May 2, 2026:

  • 50 vehicle trips made to the Community Center parking lot drop-off

  • 38 properties participated in the drive-through drop-off

  • 33 properties received curbside or street-side green waste pickup

  • 10.5 tons of green waste confirmed at the transfer station on event day

Pre-Event Defensible Space Results (Coming Soon)

Prior to May 2nd, volunteers carried out grant-funded defensible space work at properties throughout Dunsmuir as part of our ongoing Firewise action plan. This work is separate from the Green Waste Day event itself but is included here to give the community a complete picture of our fire safety efforts in 2026. We are still compiling the full results from this important work and will update this page as soon as that information is available. Please check back soon for the complete totals.

Thank You to Our Volunteers and Partners

The Spring 2026 Green Waste Day was a true community effort, and its success belongs to every person and organization that showed up and gave their time. We are grateful to all of our volunteers and partners equally; this event only works because of all of you:

  • The Fire Safe Council of Siskiyou County is a cornerstone partner who shows up for Dunsmuir year after year. Their commitment to community fire safety goes far beyond Green Waste Day, and we are grateful for everything they do for our region. A special thank you to the Fire Safe Council for their ongoing leadership in grant-funded defensible space and home hardening work here in Dunsmuir, efforts that continue to make our entire community safer and stronger.

  • The Shasta Valley Resource Conservation District (SVRCD) is a valued partner whose support of this event we deeply appreciate. The SVRCD does critical work across Siskiyou County and our region on fuels reduction, forest restoration, and wildfire resilience, all of which directly benefits communities like Dunsmuir. We are glad to have them as a partner in our Firewise action plan and at our Green Waste Day.

  • Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) sent members who traveled all the way from San Diego and San Francisco to volunteer for our community. That kind of dedication means the world to us, and we are truly honored by their support.

  • CAL FIRE sent a crew of six to seven personnel along with two fire trucks to support the event. Their presence and hard work made an enormous difference on the ground, and we are deeply grateful for the time and resources they dedicated to Dunsmuir on May 2nd.

  • The City of Dunsmuir Public Works Department provided two equipment operators who worked the full event from start to finish. Running equipment all day long is hard, skilled work, and without them, this event simply could not happen. Thank you.

This event is part of Dunsmuir's Firewise program, which brings together community members, partner organizations, and the City in a shared effort to reduce wildfire risk and build a more fire-resilient Dunsmuir. Green Waste Day is one piece of that larger collaborative effort, and we are proud to support it alongside so many dedicated partners and neighbors. The City of Dunsmuir is honored to play a supporting role in this community-wide effort and extends its sincere thanks to everyone who contributed, whether you hauled a truckload of brush, ran a piece of equipment, traveled from out of town, or simply spread the word to a neighbor. Every contribution matters.

About Dunsmuir Green Waste Day

The City of Dunsmuir holds Green Waste Day events each spring and fall as part of its ongoing Firewise program and commitment to community fire safety. The event gives residents a free opportunity to dispose of green waste including branches, leaves, brush, and yard debris. Results from each event are tracked and compared year over year to measure our community's progress toward a more fire-resilient Dunsmuir.
